Ducks. Tasty tasty ducks.

by Veronica on March 14, 2010

So today, thanks be to the great and mighty freecycle, I added to our family.

Aren’t they delicious looking?

I must admit, I love ducks. I love their personalities, I love the way they have so much character. I love the little peeping noises muscovy ducks make and I love the way they taste, roasted, for dinner.

Sigh.

I just love ducks.

I have no idea what sex these birds are, at 6 months old and being a complete non-expert, I can’t tell yet.

The idea will be though, to keep one drake and however many girls we’ve got, slaughtering any extra drakes as they get fat and juicy looking.

Then, we’ll let them lay eggs, steal some eggs for eating and then let them have babies.

Babies that I’ll happily eat as they get big enough.

Say it with me now… Mmmmmmm, duck….

Mmmmmmmmm ducks.

I like ducks.

We’re slowly getting our act together to get some chooks as well and I’m looking forward to that. Fresh eggs and free range chicken always make me happy.

Then the next thing to do is plant more fruit trees and fence off the orchard, fill a fence line with raspberry canes and add some red currants in there somewhere.

I think it’s going to be a very busy autumn.

mmmm ducks, Yum.

I will start digging out some raspberry canes for you soon. And strike you some red currants, anything else? More jostaberries maybe?

Yes, I’d love some jostaberries. And really the same things I asked for today – some more mint, and I’ll grab those strawberry runners too next time.

silly question but can they fly ?

I confess I don’t think Ive tried roast duck or much duck period.

My friend has these ducks & lives next to school …she got a nasty letter about their droppings in the playground …I don’t think she keeps them for eating though.

An orchard sounds a wonderful idea !

No worries sweetheart and I will do you some flowering currants as well. The birds like them. Elders will grow from a cutting as well. and then there are grapes and and and

Trish, we clipped their wings so they can’t fly.

A fenceline of raspberry canes?? Mmmm, raspberry everything….

I always planned to fence my orchard (if I ever had one) with a hazelnut hedge on one side a low grape vine on the other side with basil and lavender bushes at each end to bring the bees. Sadly, this is a dream only, unless I suddenly find myself with a block of land…..

I like ducks, just not for dinner.

Muscovy duck eggs make the very best pasta, so much so that we gave up making it with chicken eggs and will only have homemade pasta when the girls are laying.
